Southern Yellow Pine has heartwood which may be light yellow/orange to reddish brown in color or even yellowish brown. The sapwood is light tan to yellowish white. The grain is closed, with high figuring, and patterns range from clear to knotty. Southern Yellow Pine is indigenous to North America and is typically found growing in the coastal plain of the Southeast. There are variations within the species and include Longleaf Pine ( P. palustris), Shortleaf Pine (P. echinata), Loblolly Pine ( P. taeda), and Slash Pine (P. elliottii).
