Southern Yellow Pine Grades
Before we dive into the grades, keep in mind that grades don’t address the wood’s integrity and different grades are appropriate for different applications and design considerations.
C
This grade of flooring is mostly clear but allows a limited number of surface checks and small tight knows. It is excellent for painted or natural finish.
C&BTR
This is a combination of B&B and C grades and satisfies the requirements for high-quality finish. It is virtually knot free with limited range of color variations and grain patterns. It is similar to Select oak grade.
D&BTR
This is an economical and serviceable grade for natural or painted finish. This grade has all of naturally occurring wood character remaining: this includes infrequent small knots, minor color variations and varying grain patterns.
#1&Better
Has more characteristics than C&BTR, with small to medium knots permitted. The color variations are more pronounced. Has a beautiful rustic appearance.
#2
Ideal for applications where appearance is not a factor; has high utility value. This grade has all of naturally occurring wood character remaining: frequent large knots, color variations and varying grain patterns. Similar to #2 or Character oak grade.
